About Haase
Siegfried Fritz Haase was a renowned German-Canadian war artist born in Stolp, Pomerania, Germany on September the 1st of 1916. By the end of his life, Haase had immigrated to Canada, and established himself as an artist, teaching classes at the Ontraio College of Art and Design, until his passing. Haase had four sisters, two of whom were lost in flight in the Spring of 1945 when the boat of refugees leaving Danzig harbour was torpedoed. At the time, his sister Christel was pregnant and had her two small children, Burkhard and Marianne, with her.

September 1916 – January 1935.
Haase studied at the School of Typographie und Gebrauchswerbung (Advertising) in Stolp, Pomerania from January 1932 – January 1935, and later became a Student in Commercial Art, intent on becoming a commercial artist.
In order to give Stolp a facelift, the city advertised a competition for a design for a fountain to be placed in one of the town squares, and for designs for carved street signs. Haase won the street sign competition, and the City of Stolp paid Haase’s tuition at the Kunstakademie in Berlin from 1936-1939. Had he not won the competition, he wouldn’t have been able to attend the academy.
September 1936 – March 1939
After becoming an Atelier student in September 1936, at Vereinigte Staatsschulen für freie und angewandte Kunst, Berlin-Charlottenburg, Germany, he became one of the youngest students to be accepted into his Master’s program with Professor Ferdinand Spiegel in 1937. While studying in Berlin, Haase had the opportunity to work in the studio of Käthe Kollwitz who had been forced out of the academy in 1933. Haase was proud that as a student, he had the chance to work in her studio. After an incident at the same academy, where he expressed his opinion, he was dismissed and took of a leave of absence until the next semester while working at a post office. On March 7, 1939, he married Hedwig Maria Doering. He planned on continuing his studies at the Academy in Berlin, but his plans were terminated by the war.
September 1936 – 1945.
Haase worked as a radio operator at a Luftwaffe weather station, and as a war artist in Belgium and Northern France from September 1st of 1939 to 1945. During this time Haase painted murals in hospitals and taught handicrafts, and at one point during this time, Haase walked away unscathed from his airplane which had crashed after being shot down
On September 5, 1940 his first daughter, Ingrid Monika was born.
Near the end of 1944, and the beginning of 1945, Eastern Germany had been less involved in the war than the Western part, for this reason, Haase transferred all of his paintings from Berlin and France back to Stolp, thinking they would be safe there, but during the takeover of Pomerania during the Russian invasion, the last 15 years of his work was lost. A younger sister had stated that his apartment was “crammed full with paintings”, all the furniture had been moved around so that the paintings could be stacked up against the walls. Some of these paintings included flower paintings and folders that contained water colors, two genres which were not evident in his work later in Canada. Many of these paintings were done on large canvases, which Haase preferred to work on at the time.
Four paintings, however, were saved. This included the Boy with Dog, and Still Life with Ceramic Jug, both from 1932 when he was just 16 years old, as well as two paintings done in Brussels, Cathedral (Brussels), 1943, and one which depicted a Brussels’ town square in Winter. There had also been a pen and ink Self Portrait from 1936, which was saved. These works of art had been saved because they had been given as presents to friends near Garder Lake where the artist painted and flew gliders as a young man. The latter painting hung in his apartment in Schlangenbad, Taunus, between 1947 to 1952. When leaving for Canada, Haase gifted that painting to Pfarrer Josef Schaller, a parish priest. Later on Pfarrer Schaller wrote to Haase that he had submitted the painting to an art show in Frankfurt where it had won a prize.
1945 – 1952
After the war, Haase’s company of ten soldiers walked from France into Germany, where they were met by a group of American soldiers that were prepared to shoot them right then and there. Haase’s company was saved at the last moment by American officers who happened to be on the scene. During this time, he worked at the American Rocker Club, in Wiesbaden, Germany. Haase built soap box cars for the club to enter into competitions, and when some of the American soldiers found out that he was an artist, they had him paint portraits as souvenirs to take home with them.
On May 21, 1947, his second daughter, Barbara Maria was born.
Haase continued his work in Wiesbaden, Germany and Mainz, Hessen, Germany as a freelance artist, and interior design, painting murals in industrial buildings and designing theaters. during this time, he worked for Bühnenbau Herwig (UTA Film). During this time, the artist had brought himself a small motorcycle to arrive home more regularly, from work. One night, on his way home from Weisbaden a car infront of him killed a rabbit. Haase got off his motorcycle, brought the rabbit home and the family had rabbit stew that Sunday. At a summer fair in St. Josef, Gymansium, Geiseheim / Rheingau, Haase made flower post cards (linoleum cut) to be sold by students to help them rebuild their gymansium which was destroyed during the war. On various annual city registration cards from 1945-1952, he lists his jobs as “Barhelfer, Graphiker, Innendekorateur, Graphiker und Plakatenmaler, Dekorateur, Schriftenmaler, Künstler”. Friends and family acknowledged that no job was beneath him, whether he was harvesting asparagus in the fields or building a large picture window into the slanted ceiling of his room in Villa Christa, Schlangenbad,Taunus.
1952 – 1957
On October the 14th, 1952, Haase and his family emigrated to Canada. He had worked his way across the ocean on a freighter ship. His wife and daughter Barbara obtained places on the vessel when when other passengers cancelled their tickets. He arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on October 14. Haase had no job scheduled upon his arrival in Canada, and did not know what would happen when he arrived there.
From November of 1952, to Februray of 1957, Haase began work at Eastern Photo Engravers in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He stated that the working conditions were not very good. Although he was the only one at the company with professional training, he was paid very poorly. While working at the Eastern Photo Engravers, he trained a young German immigrant who had absolutely no knowledge of his profession. After a couple of weeks, the company fired Haase because they had this younger man that could now do the job, whom they could pay even less, but by that time, he had already secured a job at Maritime Photo Engravers limited. At one point, he received a job offer from a company in Saint John, New Brunswick, and planned on moving with his family there for work within the next two weeks of his start, he returned before that time because he preferred living in Halifax.
Baptized into the Catholic Church in 1953. Reverend Melanson, St. Paul’s Church, Herring Cove, NS. Confirmed: June 28, 1953, His Excellency, Most Rev. A. B. Leverman, D.D. Confirmation name: Paul.
In order to make ends meet he took on other jobs such as sewing furniture coverings and curtains, helping renovate a schooner, painting signs for businesses and churches, and other freelance work. He became active in his community and church, which brought upon him, the responsibility of cleaning, painting and renovating the local school and church whenever necessary, during his time on vacation.
He converted an abandoned garage into a four room house, which his family had coined “unsere Hundehütte” / “our doghouse”. They lived in the home for the next eight years, and during this time he acquired property in St. Paul’s Ave to build his own house. He organized his studio in the basement with high ceilings and East faciing windows.
Upon his arrival in Canada, apart from taking English classes, he also signed up for a Life Drawing class. Haase quit this class and organized life study classes in his home for any interested local artists. He painted 232 renditons of the nude in various media including: 17 in oil, 16 in pastel, 46 in charcoal, 2 in etching, 90 in pencil and 4 in woodcut.
During the beginning of his career, obtaining supplies was difficult, if not impossible. Haase simply did not have the money, but apart from his financial concerns, finding supplies in Halifax was difficult, some of his earliest paintings were painted on potato sacking instead. He built the machine for his lithographs himself, instead of purchasing an expensive version from the United States. He scrounged limestone needed for his prints from boats in the Halifax harbor. The stones were used for ballast. During this period of time, he also organized local classes to demonstrate the use of his machines for making lithographs.
1957 – 1964
From 1957, to 1964, Haase worked at the Maritime Photo Engravers Limited after being fired from Eastern Photo Engravers in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
On March the 5th, 1958, Siegfried Fritz Haase received his Canadian citizenship. In 1961, he designed and made props for a high school production of Aida at Mt. St. Vincent Academy, Rockingham, Halifax, Nova Scotia. During the 1960’s Haase also worked on various government contracts at Louisbourg, Cape Breton and while in that region, he painted a mural at a restaraunt in North Sydney. He built a float for a Halifax parade, a stork carrying 5 babies, illustrating the amalgamation of surrounding towns with Halifax, and in 1964, he was asked to be an Associate Professor at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design by Donald Cameron Mackay, to teach graphic techniques, printmaking, and illustration. He worked as a professor at NSCAD from September of 1964 to 1982, retiring in 1982.
1967 – 1984
In 1967, Haase and his family went back to Germany for the first time since leaving in 1952. He returned to visit his family there, and during this time he painted a picture of his mother. During his time in Germany, he visited Berlin where he contacted Hans Scholz, who had also been a master student with Ferdinand Spiegel. Scholz was surprised that Haase was alive, as he and other students believed he was lost in action. Scholz said that he put Haase into one of his novels as someone killed during the war.
In November of 1967, Haase’s Wife, Ingrid suffered a near-fatal car accident.
On December 25, 1971, Haase suffered a major stroke, although recovering well physically, he continued to suffer from aphasia until his death.
In 1982, Haase officialy retired from his role as an Associate Professor at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, but continued his work on contract, teaching drawing, until moving to Cambridge, Ontario, in September of 1984.
During Pope John Paul II’s visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia in September 1984, Haase’s painting Our Lady of Czestochowa was chosen to hang in the papal suite.
On September 18, 1984, Haase’s sister, Hedwig Maria Haase passed away after a triple by-pass operation performed at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
By the end of 1984, Haase moved to Cambridge, Ontario to live with his daughter Barbara (Bärbel) and her family. He commuted daily to his studio in Kitchener, Ontario, and became very productive during this period of time.
1984 – 1996
On April / May of 1985, Haase visited his sole survving sister, Eleonore in Osnabrück, Germany, and two paintings, German Town and Churches of Osnabrück resulted from the visit.
In 1986, he painted a mural for a new bus depot in Kitchener, and has an exhibit at Gallery & Library, Preston Branch, Cambridge Public Library, Cambridge Ontario; 11 paintings were displayed.
In 1987, during summer travel with friends, Rosi and Günther Brings in a Volkswagen camper through Quebec and the Maritimes, three paintings dealing with Quebec scenes were created.
In 1988, Haase once again visits his sister in Osnabrück, Germany, and they spent two weeks together in Northern Italy. The trip became inspiration for seven paintings dealing with scenes of the Southern Tyrol Region around Meran.
In May of 1989, Haase moved to Ottawa, Ontario and resides at the Glebe Centre until his death. During this time, he went for long walks every day and sketched old houses in the Glebe area of Ottawa. 130 of these pencil sketches are extant.
In 1990, Haase visited his friends Rosi and and Günther Brings in Courtenay, BC and travelled together with them through British Columbia.
in 1994, Bernard Riordon organizes an exhibit, Keeping Faith: The Life and Work of Siegfried Haase at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, Nova Scotia, from April 23 – June 12. John Murchie was the Guest Curator and Horst Deppe was the Guest Writer
Siegfried Fritz Haase died on June 6, 1996 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. On August 30, 1996, his family was invited to a luncheon at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Halifax, after the Memorial Service at St. Paul’s Church in Herring Cove, Nova Scotia. Haase’s paintings from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia’s permanent collection are exhibited.
